2002.83.1Description
William Rentschler, politician-publisher
An unpublished portrait of Everett McKinley Dirksen was unveiled in Chicago by William H. Rentschler, who commissioned the portrait, and Hubert Ropp, right, the artist, and presented to Mrs. Louella Dirksen for possible display in the Dirksen Research Center, Pekin, Illinois, Dirksen's hometown. Dated October 16, 1969
The artist and Dirksen were born and raised in Pekin and were classmates throughout elementary and high school. Ropp brought the then Louella Carver and Dirksen together by budding actors in a stage presentation in Pekin.
Rentschler knew of the lifelong friendship and when he discovered Ropp, a 17-year dean of the Art Institute of Chicago, had never painted Dirksen, so he and other prominent GOP leaders commissioned the portrait. The others involved in the portrait are: R. Douglas Stuart, Robert D. Stuart, Jr., Albert D. Farwell, Gen. Robert E. Wood, Mrs. Mary Runnells, Calvin Fentress, Jr. and John D. AmesLexicon
