Description

Durand Art Institute, Lake Forest College. Architect: Henry Ives Cobb. Photo dated 1979. Durand Art Institute built 1891 by architect Henry Ives Cobb. Named after Henry C. Durand, this building was constructed at a cost of $50,000, to be used as an art institute for the Chicago Art Institute Club of Lake Forest. It was built of brown sandstone from Lake Michigan. The style is French Romanesque. Originally, the interior of elaborate oak detail contained an auditorium and a library. In 1980 the building reopened after being closed for 3 years while it was being remodeled by architect Edward Noonan.
