Description

Caption by Bob Janz: "A Double headed passenger train with engine 1354 ahead, spotted at a water tank on the left side of the engines. The train is headed north at Madison Street crossing in Waukegan, Illinois. Engine 1354, a class R-1 Ten-Wheeler, 4-6-0 type, was built by Schenectady in August of 1906. The second engine appears to be a class D 4-4-2. At the south end of the train is a footbrige over the tracks connecting the depot and snow covered platforms to the left. A Sanborn train order signal and a roundhouse also appear to the south at rear of train. Snow shovel gangs as seen here were often recruited in Chicago and sent by train to locations where help was needed when the railroad's labor force was insufficient to cope with the situation. Date unknown.
