Description

Wenban Drug Store on Deerpath Avenue with cars on both sides of street (a slide and a copy of the photo accompanies postcard). Postcard is blank on the reverse Deerpath Cafe, Bowling Description from original donor to LFL (Philip L. Speidel), written in 1985 (see 2002.492.117): "This priceless postcard was sent to me by Beulah Tibbetts Ward of Independence, Iowa. Beulah was one of the three children of C. P. Tibbetts who came to Lake Forest about 1906-07 to be the superintendent of the David B. Jones estate at Green Bay and Deer Path. Her mother was an ardent WCTU worker. Beulah graduated with me from 8th grade at Gorton School in 1910 and also from Deerfield Shields High School in Highland Park in June 1914." "The postcard mostly shows the south side of Deerpath looking west. The brick building is now the "Money Shop" of the First National Bank. It was then occupied as a cafe by Ned Burgess and a drug store by Frank Wenban. The frame building was the harness shop of W. J. Wyman and the white double house next door was purchased by the First National Bank from William J. Quigley about 1929. It was razed (I think) and the Bank built the new building on that corner designed by Stanley Anderson. The Bank moved into that new building in late March, 1931." "Beyond can be seen the building that was owned by John E. Fitzgerald, a plumbing contractor. The Tom Eastwood building across the street on the corner of Deerpath and Bank Lane is now the Baskin Robbins store. A close look gives a view of City Hall. Still beyond on the south side of Deerpath may be seen the Wenban building - still there and still a funeral home." "The several Model T. Ford cars in the picture are very interesting." "When Market Square was built Frank J. Wenban moved his drug store to the space now occupied by T. J. Grant - and George Robertson took the Wenban space on Deerpath for his first store."
