Description

Meeting of the mayors in communities affected by the announcement of the closing of the North Shore & Milwaukee Railroad, February 23, 1961 in the office of Mayor Richard J. Daley in Chicago. Mayor Daley is standing at left; Mayor John J. Noel of Mundelein is seated at left; Mayor George Beach Jr. of Lake Forest is seated second from left; Village president Joseph W. Koss of Deerfield is seated second from right. Standing to Mayor Daley's right is Gil Curran of Lake Bluff. Standing on the far right is Karl Berning of West Deerfield Township. Other mayors unidentified. See associated item (2012.4.1.1 and 2012.4.1.2) scan of 2-page Western Union telegram to Joseph W. Koss from Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley, dated February 20, 1961. Text reads, "At the suggestion of many people in the metropolitan area - including some of the mayors - I am calling a meeting in my office for Thursday, February 23rd, at 2:30 p.m. to discuss the projected abandonment of the North Shore Railroad and the possibility of initiating a mass transportation authority for the metropolitan area. I do hope you can arrange your schedule to be in attendance and will appreciate your calling my office Randolph 6-8000 extension 304 to indicate whether or not you will be here."
