2005.66.131Description
Sgt Earl Dunn, the leader of the robbery gang (possibly Frank Tufano), and Chief Frank Tiffany.
The robbery of the William H. Mitchell House (Bowood, 901 Rosemary Road) took place on November 21, 1931 and was committed by members of the Forty-two gang. The home invasion occurred while the Mitchells and seven other guests were at home, playing backgammon. Five masked men entered the home waving pistols and escaped with money and jewelry valued at $150,000. William Matheson, the Mitchell chauffeur, reached a telephone in the confusion and called the police. The robbers fled, exchanging shots with Lake Forest police officers. The next day, an overcoat with the stolen jewelry in the pockets was found on the Mitchell estate. Frank Tufano, a member of the Forty-two Gang, was implicated in the robbery after an automobile with license plates issued to his mother was found near the Mitchell property. Servants in the home identified Tufano as one of the robbers. He was arrested with three other gang members (Joseph Perello, Paul Ross, and Nick Maentenis) - all were convicted and sentenced to one year in the Illinois State Penitentiary.Lexicon
