2022.5.5Description
"The Playhouse from the grounds with Dorothy Aldis "going inside". The Shaw doorway now hangs on the Porter summer home in South Haven, MI. The hooded piece of art work above the door depicts the themes of joy and tregedy common to theatre.
The original work of art was in oil, painted on galvanized steel, obviously intended to hang outside, mounted in a heavy cedar frame. Although the colors were quite vivid, after all of these years of exposure, the paint had cracked and falked off here and there. A South Haven artist / restorer, Barbara Houlberg, concluded the original could not be touched up. Working from the original and blow-ups, she duplicated the original.
The Playhouse contained a doorway on the extreme right end of the building with a brick walk that led to two cottages beyond: Bluebird and the Hayloft. The brick walk also led to a gate in the high board fence that once surrounded the property along Deerpath and Greenbay. On the gatepost was a ceramic tile of the address: 134 so that mail could go directly to the Playhouse or the cottages."
