Description

"#22 & #23: These are interesting as Sterner did #22, and what a beautiful woman she was with that long aristocrat neck and bosom. #23 is her wedding portrait, signed rather boldly, but almost impossible to read what it means. Perhaps AF/WB/P or it might be AF/YP. It is an oil, glassed, but has oil crack of a minute degree. But, there is that wonderful neck, bosom, by another artist who saw it in the same way." "#24: Both by Sterner at Newport, 1908 and, in 25, he probably took some artistic advantage of that neck, but the face is exactly like the other portraits he did of her that summer. As I wrote you, Mary's cousin, Frances Kilroe - who probably knew Mary better than Arthur during this period, claimed the commisions were a way to float a summer romance. We know she had a long romance with Howard Shaw. Sylvia and Evelyn knew about that and it didn't bother them one wit. Graham knew all about it. Dorothy knew abot it and though of it as "romantic" but, Dorothy knew about Sylia's escapades and thought of them in the same way. To Dorothy, to conduct such affairs put more strain on family relationships than was necesarry. yes, she knew you handled your husband in a way that would leave him happy. Grum would ask her to take the car to the garage and have snow tires put on the car. But, running a house and a family, plus her writing, Dorothy would forget that promise. And, when Grum would come up the drive way she'd remember her promise and she'd say to her daughters, "Girls. Come here. i'm going to lie to your father." And when Grum would come into the hall and get settled, asking if she got the car to the garage, she'd say "Of course, I did." knowing that she could take the car the next morning. Nothing wrong with that, as I see it. Made for marital harmony and you could settle down to two drinks before dinner, happily." -Notes provided by Roy E. Porter, son-in-law of Graham Aldis, and grandson-in-law of Arthur Aldis.
