During World War I, William Mitchell was a Navy Pilot. In 1918 he married Ginevra King, the inspiration for Daisy Buchanan in The Great Gatsby. The couple later divorced and William married Anne Wood (pictured). William founded the investment firm Mitchell, Hutchins and Co., where he served as Chairman until his retirement in 1964. At his Lake Forest estate he employed a Scottish born chauffeur and gardener."

In 1921, he married Lolita Armour. in 1925, he helped found the National Air Transport, which later merged with three other competitors and became United Airlines."
