Annie Beck 1896-1985 In 1916, Annie Beck arrived in Fort Lauderdale as the new bride of the town’s first drug store owner, Alfred J. Beck. By 1919, Annie had begun to make a name for herself within the community as an active and outgoing member. She organized the Women’s Auxiliary of the Episcopal Church and the first literary group, the Study Club. An avid reader, Annie started a library within her own home, encouraging the public to use it. The library at the Fort Lauderdale Garden Center was named and dedicated to her in appreciation for her service of keeping a library within her home for public use. A charter member of the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society and member of multiple organizations, Annie could be found throughout the city serving the community. Known throughout the city of Fort Lauderdale as a passionate gardener, Annie served as Corresponding Secretary for the Florida Federation of Garden Club from 1931 to 1933. She later became the President of the Fort Lauderdale Garden Club in which she distributed seeds and plants at every meeting. In 1939, an Advisory Park Board was formed at her suggestion with Annie acting as Chairman. An integral part of the beautification of Fort Lauderdale, Annie was honored on her 90th birthday by the Fort Lauderdale City Commission who named her Citizen of the Year. In conjunction with this honor, the Federated Garden Circles of Fort Lauderdale and the City of Fort Lauderdale dedicated the Annie Beck Park of Flowering Trees.
