Ruth Dichtenmueller 1904-1983 Ruth Teal was born in Wadesboro, N.C. before moving to Fort Lauderdale and graduating from Fort Lauderdale High School in 1923. In 1926, she married Hugo H. Dichtenmueller, a member of the family who owned Fort Lauderdale Wholesale Grocery and part of the land which is now Stranahan High School. Throughout her life, Ruth dedicated her time and effort to education, her community, and her family. History Fort Lauderdale Photograph Collection 1983 Ruth began her 30 year career as an elementary school teacher at Westside School. Her career quickly moved forward as she set herself apart by leading programs and educational workshops for fellow teachers and parents. From the classroom, to principle, to General Supervisor of Instruction for Broward County Schools, Ruth put progress at the forefront. In 1945 she advocated for the use of audio-visual teaching methods to hold students interests, supplementing the use of lectures. A lifelong advocate for education, Ruth attended Florida State College for Women, now Florida State University. Later, she gained her Masters from the University of Miami and became President of FSU Alumni Association. Ruth Dichtenmueller was Vice President of Community Service Council for Broward County. The Community Service Council’s function was to determine needs and the resources to meet such needs of the community. A United Fund Agency, Ruth worked tirelessly with other council members and community organizations such as the Visiting Nurses Association, Children’s Home Society, and the Mental Hygiene Clinic to help families and individuals in need. The Community Service Council also maintained a “Referral and Information Center” for the community which educated those in need of the services offered by Broward County.
