"3,000-Pound Manta Draws Crowd to New River Dock
Fort Lauderdale, Fla., March 3. -- The giant manta, weighing approximately 3,000 pounds, which attracted thousands of sightseers to the municipal docks in New river Tuesday, was towed to sea this morning.
Capt. John Burwell, dockmaster, said a check made by him at various periods throughout the day showed that upwards of 5,000 persons had come to the dock to gaze at the monster. The manta was harpooned off this port by Howard B. Jones, George W. Pearson and Allen, Burette, all of Evanston Ill., while fishing aboard the cruiser Viking with Capt. Eddie Saar. The Illinois sportsmen conquered the leviathan after a battle of more than three hours.
Although the manta has been the greatest single attraction of the current big game fishing season, crowds assemble at the municipl docks each day as the charter boats come in from the sea at dusk.
So eager have been the crowds to know what has been caught, how many kinds of fish and the names of the sportsmen, that Ernst Bratzel, recreation director, siad that he is installing an amplifier to broadcast the information as the boats dock. Will J. Reed, city commissioner, has consented to make the announcements, Mr. Bratzel said."
