General Notes

Note

Notes: Built in 1876. Five Houses of Refuge were built every 25 miles along the southeast Florida coast. If shipwrecked sailors came ashore, within 25 miles north or south, they could find a House of Refuge which would provide them with food and shelter until another ship came by. House #4 was originally built on the beach, just south of Birch State Park. In 1891, it was moved to the Bahia Mar area. Later used by the U.S. Coast Guard.
