Dorothy Crawford 1924-2019 Born in Mount Olive, North Carolina, Dorothy Crawford visited Fort Lauderdale in 1946 with a friend. She fell in love with the city and quickly moved in the same year. Upon arrival, Dorothy joined the First United Methodist Church, then Park Temple, where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, and was President of the Women’s Society of the Christian Service. In 1946, Dorothy served as Miss Fort Lauderdale in the Orange Bowl Parade for the Chamber of Commerce. In addition to the various activities and committees within the church, Dorothy was a member of the Junior League of Fort Lauderdale. During her time with Junior League, Dorothy became a founding trustee for the Museum of Art of Fort Lauderdale, now NSU Art Museum. Community oriented and driven, Dorothy Crawford dedicated herself to the improvement of Fort Lauderdale. In the 1950s, with the influx of students at East Side Elementary, Dorothy helped raise funds for portable classrooms. A solution to the growing number of students which is still used throughout Broward County Schools. In 1974, Governor Askew appointed Dorothy to serve on the Florida Supreme Court Judicial Nominating Commission. She was the first woman to serve on the Commission. In 1978, Dorothy became the first woman elected to the Board of Directors of the United Federal Savings & Loans Association of Broward County. Dedicated to the community, Dorothy also participated in the Opera Guild and the Fort Lauderdale Symphony. She was a member of The Review Club, The Federated Garden Clubs of Broward County, and sat on the Board of the Salvation Army.
