Dr. Susie C. Holley 1896-1981 Dr. Susie Holley was a woman of sound principles and a firm commitment to her cause, education and community service. Upon arriving in Fort Lauderdale in 1941, Dr. Holley was already an established leader. Through her teaching and fundraising efforts, Dr. Holley was instrumental in saving Florida Memorial College (Miami) during the Depression. She used her close affiliation with the Baptist Church to unite funding sources and keep the school operational. During this time Dr. Holley came to hold many positions within the Women’s and Educational Conventions of Baptist Church, and a seat on the Trustee Board of the Florida Memorial College. History Fort Lauderdale Photograph Collection Once in Broward County Dr. Holley continued her service along with taking on new tasks. Chief among them was the Cradle Nursery. Started in order to support the need for a day care center, it grew from a one room setup in a church, into a full-scale center with its own building. Dr. Holley also participated in the Northwest Women’ Federal Club, the United Way, and the Northwest YMCA. Dr. Holley gave her wisdom to the League of Women Voters, the United Nations Association, the Church Women United of Greater Fort Lauderdale, the Broward County Historical Commission, the NAACP, the Juvenile Court Advisory Board, and many others.
