Description

A Portrait of Dr. Von D. Mizell. Von Delany Mizell (1910-1973) originally from Dania, was the second black physician in Fort Lauderdale. Since at that time Fort Lauderdale's hospitals would not accept "colored" patients, he helped Dr. Sistrunk establish Provident Hospital for black residents. He boycotted Fort Lauderdale's "Colored School and along with Eula Johnson he arranged sit-ins and boycotts during the civil rights movement in Fort Lauderdale. He founded the first NAACP chapter in South Florida.
