Scope and Content

Announcement and invitation August 4, 1876 to City of Hoboken by N.J. Centennial Commission to attend a reception held by Governor Joseph D. Bedle at the State Building, August 24, 1876. Two printed items. The year was the United States Centennial and the event was related to New Jersey Day, August 24 at the Centennial Exposition in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia. The "State Building" stated in the printed items was the New Jersey State Building (or Pavillion) on Belmont Avenue at the Exposition. Text is in notes. Abraham Browning of Camden was the speaker listed in the announcement. He is credited for giving New Jersey the nickname the Garden State. According to Alfred Heston's 1926 two-volume book Jersey Waggon Jaunts, Browning called New Jersey the Garden State while speaking at the Philadelphia Centennial exhibition on New Jersey Day (August 24, 1876). See http://www.state.nj.us/nj/about/facts/nickname/ for a fuller discussion of this topic. City of Hoboken document without any City Clerk file notations. It is probable that it was originally sent to the Board of Police Commissioners. ---
