Description

Black-and-white copy photo of view of Hoboken waterfront from Pier 5, Holland America Line pier, boat clubhouses, public baths to North German Lloyd Line pier near 4th St., Hoboken, no date, circa 1902-1910. Copy print, 5" x 7", produced August 2010. Original photographer and source not indicated. (Museum does not own copyright or permission to duplicate; item is presented for research use only and not for duplication.) Photo is probably from the same series as 2011.005.0018; see related. View is an elevated view southeast with River Street or Road not visible at the bottom; a very small corner of Hudson Square Park to the lower right. Dating is approximate, but the North German Lloyd pier shed at the right is the one constructed after the 1900 fire. Date not established for when the boat club houses were removed, but they do appear in Plate 4 of the 1909 Hopkins Atlas in these locations. Hudson River traffic includes a large ferry, tugboat and other vessels. Cunard Line piers seen on the New York City waterfront. Detail scans as described below. Detail lower left: entrance gate to Holland American Line pier 5 with sign over entry; building to left of entrance has signage: Berry Forwarding Company, Cartage and Shipping; three railroad barges are seen surrounding the docked and unidentified ocean liner: (bottom to top) Lehigh Valley, Lackawanna; New York Central; also a lighter. Detail lower right: boat clubs from right: Valencia, Active with small undentified one behind the Active. At the upper left corner in this detail is the Public Bath House. Detail center right: a grain elevator boat docked at North German Lloyd Steamship Lines pier 1 (at Fourth Street and the Hudson River.)
