Description

Black-and-white photo of the S.S. Walter Rice at the Todd Shipyards Corporation, Hoboken Division, Saturday, February 23, year not stated. The vessel was formerly a T-2 oil tanker and was jumboized by more than 100 feet. It is being [re]christened by Mrs. Walter Rice, wife of the vice-president of Reynolds Metal company, the vessel's operator. Bunting hangs from the bow and is also on the christenening platform. Flag has 48 stars so the event had to have happened prior to 1959. Mimeographed press release from the Wendell P. Colton Co., division of the Wesley Associates, for the Todd Shipyards Corporation, on 1/2 of an 8.5 x 11 sheet was attached to the back of the photograph with rubber cement or similar.
