Description

Black-and-white photo of Bishop's Theatre at 106 First St., Hoboken, no date, Spring 1913. 8" x 10" high print. Reverse is blank except for purchase price. Photographer not known. People are not identified, but proprietor Henry Bishop and his wife, Mabel, are apparently present. See below for an added identification. This building is currently the Shannon Bar. Several pieces of information help to date this image. The sign board to the the right of the doors, "Today", lists three films: Tapped Wires, The Joy Ride [also known as the The Joy Rider] and The Prince of Evil. Tapped Wires and Prince of Evil were 1913 releases; The Joy Ride was from 1912. A three-sheet "Kinemacolor" poster is at the right and the sign board to the left of the doors has Kinemacolor at the top and the film below, Her Son, was a 1913 release. In 2013, the small girl left of center (see detail image) was identified as Hazel Gladys Bishop (August 17, 1906 – December 5, 1998), daughter of Henry and Mabel Bishop, who would have been seven years old. Identification made by niece of Hazel Bishop, Randa Bishop.
