Black-and-white photograph of Rose Beck with fiance George Jaxel wearing his U.S. Army uniform, backyard garden, 600 Monroe St.?, Hoboken, Sunday, August 18, 1918.
Identifications per donor, grandson of Rose and George Jaxel, Edward Jaxel.
Rose Beck lived at 600 Madison Street, Hoboken and it is probable that the photo was taken in the backyard garden or at a nearby building.
Digital image only. Original scanned 2014 from 2-3/8" x 4-1/8" clipped print. Reverse had contemporary pencil notation: Taken Sunday Aug. 18, 1918.
----
Jaxel was a resident of West Hoboken. He had apparently just completed basic training and was on leave (but did embark at Hoboken for France - see notes for text about return.) His Army address was 32 Company, 8th Battalion, 153 Depot Brigade, Camp Dix, New Jersey. See archives 2014.050.0001 to .0003 for three sweetheart postcards from Rose to him from August 5 and 6 when he was at Camp Dix.

Notes: A 1918 newsclipping (not present) described Jaxel's return from Europe:
Private George Jaxel, of 514 Syms Street, West Hoboken, who served in France for over four months with the 347 Infantry, was one of the first West Hoboken boys to arrive from "over there." He reached New York on board the Mauretania on Monday, and is now at Camp Merritt, but expects to be sent to Camps Dix, here he will be mustered out.
