Description

Black-and-white photos, nine, of ship hull models or propulsion systems undergoing testing at Experimental Towing Tank, Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, no date, circa 1950-1953. Format varies: 7@ 8" x 10"; 1@ 11" x 14"; 1@ 5" x 8"; print type varies and is noted. Photographer is not indicated; apparently flash photography. Reverse blank. With: three printed envelopes with return address Experimental Towing Tank, Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, New Jersey. None are addressed or mailed. One at 11-1/2" x 14-1/2" has holographic pen note: Left in Aug. 1953. A line runs to the return address and circles it. Previous owner is not indicated, but apparently it was a Stevens student or staff member. This facility is located on the east side of Hudson Street between Seventh and Eighth Streets (711 Hudson St.). Called the Experimental Towing Tank until 1958 when it was renamed Davidson Laboratory. It is presently called Davidson Marine Hydrodynamics Laboratory. Nine prints total, 2 in duplicate: Photo 1: 11" x 14" wide matte print; stationary view of hull test model 1181 in water connected to test support frame. Photo 2: 8" x 10" semi-gloss (SG) print; same image as Photo 1 Photo 3: 8" x 10" SG print: view of hull test model G57 in water; note support frame is stationary (tied off to c-clamp at upper right); water is flowing past the bow. Photo 4: 8" x 10" matte print; hull test model 1287 with support; wave at bow; also number label on test support 12867 Photo 5: 8" x 10" matte print; no hull number seen; in motion; note the narrowness of the test hull - possible submarine or pontoon Photo 6: 8" x 10" matte print; no hull number seen; in motion; possibly an underwater detail of the hull seen in Photo 5 Photo 7: 8" x 10" matte print; hull test model 1292; wave at bow; also number label on test support 12858 Photo 8: not imaged; same image and print type as Photo 7 Photo 9: 4-1/8" x 8-1/4" high glossy print; no model number or identification; five image sequence of a propeller / propulsion system operating from start to higher speed; possibly submarine or torpedo propulsion.
