Scope and Content

Tanks and Vats. Manufactured by J. Schwarzwalder & Sons, Inc., Hoboken, N.J. Established 1853. No date, issued circa 1914-1918. Booklet, 5-13/16" wide x 8-7/8" high, 20 pp. plus cover; illustrations. PDF on file. The company was at Fifteenth and Jefferson Streets, Hoboken as stated on page [1] (street address as listed in a 1910 Hoboken Board of Trade publication was: J. Schwarzwalder & Sons, (Cooperage) No. 1408-26 Jefferson Street.) The company covered the full block from 14th to 15th Sts. and Jefferson to Madison Sts. By 1919 it was known as the Atlantic Tank & Barrel Corp. The name change was likely due to its German name and World War I attitudes. See notes on dating below. Unpriced catalog from this manufacturer of wooden rooftop tanks for water supplies as well as storage for fire sprinkler systems; tanks and vats for various industries including motion picture film processing, food processing (pickling) and probably leather manufacturing (drum tank illustrated is typical of ones seen in use at Neumann Leather factory in Hoboken). Railroad tank cars were offered. See notes for transcription of text from selected pages. Page [2] is a full-page 'photo' of the Hoboken factory taken from the heights above Hoboken and although it appears as just heavily retouched, it is actually an artist's depiction after a photograph. Madison Street is not shown and would have been on the west side of the factory between it and the railroad tracks. The view is southeast showing the plant just north of the Fourteen Street viaduct and east of the railroad tracks of the New Jersey Junction Railroad (also used by the Erie and the N.Y. Central Railroad.) On page [3] is an artist's bird's-eye view of the Louisville, Kentucky plant which is the only mention of that facility. ---- Dating. Early date of issue for the catalog is estimated from the fact that the firm was founded in 1853 and the Introduction states "manufacturing for over sixty years" so that an issue in its 61st year, 1914, would be the estimated early date. The estimated late date of 1918 is indicated by the printer whose imprint is on the back cover: Gibbs & Van Vleck, Inc., New York and the 1919 Chemical Engineering Catalog referred to above. Gibbs & Van Vleck, Inc only operated until the end of 1917 or early 1918 under this name. William C. Van Vleck, vice-president, left the firm on March 1, 1917 and by Febuary 1918, the company name was changed to Gibbs Press, Inc. (Published source for name change - Printers Ink, Vol. 102, No. 7, Feb. 14, 1918, page 118: New York Printers Change Name. Gibbs & Van VIeck, Inc., New York printers, have changed the company name to Gibbs Press, Inc. The officers are H. E. A. Gibbs. president and treasurer; H. A. Falk and E. H. Whitney, vice presidents; J. C. Bogie, secretary.) See reference image attached of a reference image of an advertisement for this company as Atlantic Tank & Barrel Corp. in the Chemical Engineering Catalog, Volume 4, 1919, page 345, which has the same locations, founding date and illustrations (not shown in our reference image) with text that is similar to the catalog here. The company is shown on plate 8 Hopkins 1923 Atlas and listed in 1926 Polk Directory as 501 Fifteenth St. Link to Chemical Engineering Catalog, Volume 4, 1919 - find page 348 (actual printed page: 345) http://books.google.com/books?id=uxETAQAAMAAJ&pg=PA250&lpg=PA250&dq=Atlantic+Tank+%26+Barrel+Corp.&source=bl&ots=_q40Zo99D0&sig=mezIVXcW7Wv6uqe-6KC0YU0LURQ&hl=en#v=onepage&q=Atlantic%20Tank%20%26%20Barrel%20Corp.&f=false

Notes: Archives 2012.001.0129, selected text. [page 1] J. Schwarzwalder & Sons, Inc. ESTABLISHED 1853 Manufacturers of Wooden Tanks and Vats 15th & Jefferson Streets Hoboken, New Jersey. ==== page 4 J. SCHWARZWALDER & SONS, Inc. Introduction IN a catalogue of Wooden Tanks it is impossible to mention all the various styles we manufacture, as there is practically no industry in which wooden tanks in some form or other are not used. Our company has been manufacturing tanks for over sixty years, and we have always maintained the reputation of furnishing the highest quality of goods possible. We carry large stocks of oak, cypress, white cedar, and yellow pine, and are in a position to supply goods made of these materials on short notice. On all round and oval tanks—unless flat hoops are specified—we furnish hoops made of round iron or soft steel, with malleable iron draw lugs, as these are more durable than flat hoops, and on sprinkler and water supply tanks they are invariably recommended by the various Boards of Fire Underwriters. We desire to call attention to the fact that in the manufacture of our tanks all staves are dressed to conform to the true circle of the tank. This means that the hoops are in perfect contact with the staves. The bottoms are cut to fit exactly into the croze or groove in the staves, making it unnecessary to touch same up before assembling the tank. All hoops are plainly marked; and in shipping, exposed joints are protected with thin strips of wood, insuring the arrival of the tank at its destination in good condition. ===== page 5 J. SCHWARZWALDER & SONS, Inc. ROUND WOODEN TANKS. On Round Tanks all capacities are based on outside measures, the diameter being at the bottom of tank; and unless otherwise specified, all tanks are built with a slight taper (1/2 to 3/4" per foot). The Tanks listed on the following pages are sizes which cut without waste from standard sizes of lumber. However, we will be pleased to estimate on any other sizes, upon request. When writing for prices, give as much information as possible so as to give us an idea of your requirements. We would suggest the following: Capacity desired. Widest diameter, and height of staves. If possible, state purpose for which tank is to be used, for we can often make suggestions which result in a considerable saving to our customer. If covers are desired, mention whether flat or conical, or both. Also, if dunnage is required, give spacing of supporting timbers or tower. WRITE. FOR PRICES ==== page 12 SPRINKLER TANKS Manufactured according to Rules of Factory Mutual Fire Insurance Co. or Board of Fire Underwriters. All our Sprinkler tanks are constructed according to the specifications of the Factory Mutual Fire Insurance Co., or other regulations of the various Boards of Fire Underwriters and invariably call for heavier material and hoops than are usually furnished with house supply tanks. The complete tank equipment of a sprinkler in addition to the tank, calls for a flat and conical cover and inside wood ladder, also outside iron ladder. Covering the conical cover with galvanized sheet iron or Rubberoid is optional with purchaser. ==== page 13 RECTANGULAR TANKS When used for strong solutions of acids, etc., it is advisable to line the inside of tanks with copper, sheet lead or a composition of asphaltum and pitch, depending on the solution with which the tank is to be filled. Rectangular tanks are usually delivered completely assembled but when shipping any distance it is advisable to ship knock down on account of the saving in freight and the illustrations below show the manner in which the sections are taken apart for shipment.
