Catalogue of Keuffel & Esser Co., New York; General Office & Factories - Hoboken, N.J. 39th Edition; Interim Edition War Catalog. Issued August 1943. 8vo paper embossed boards, pp. vi, 221, illustrated. Laid-in pocket at rear: booklet, 5" x 8", 42 pp., "Price-List Applying to General Catalogue 39th Edition, August 15, 1943."
See condition notes.
Page ii is the typical bird's-eye view of the Hoboken general office and factories. No other views were published in this edition. Catalog is not priced as is stated in notice preceding pg [i].
A truncated edition of their general catalog, about half the number of pages as was typical of them. Front cover states the contents of this catalog: Drafting and Reproduction Materials and Equipment, Slide Rules. The catalog is unpriced as noted above and includes the separate price list which is notable in that it includes items not listed in the catalog (such as surveying equipment) and notes that some items are discontinued "for the duration." See library 2009.006.0173.01 for an imaged copy of this pricelist from another copy of the same catalog.
Because of government restrictions on paper and other materials during World War II, the catalog was shortened from previous ones; similar restrictions on materials made it difficult to have the metal, wood, etc., to produce their full product line for non-government or non-war service customers which is noted on pages iii and 215. See notes for excerpt.
August, 1943,
TO OUR PATRONS:
This, the thirty-ninth edition of our general catalog, is intended as an interim publication for the Duration.
It covers the K & E drafting room instruments and materials, reproduction materials, slide rules, etc. which are now being manufactured. Separate pamphlets will be available covering our line of surveying instruments and equipment, measuring tapes, etc.
K & E catalogs have, in the past, been recognized as text books on the needs of the engineering profession, rather than mere listings of merchandise. We trust this edition will be found equally interesting.
We are striving constantly to supply, in so far as possible, every demand made on us by our thousands of customers scattered throughout the world.
The Army, the Navy and those directly concerned with war production are making heavy demands on our facilities and you, of course, will want them to have first call.
The numerous suggestions and comments which we continue to receive from our patrons are very helpful. We welcome your views on both our products and our service
[end excerpt]
The forty page price list includes prices for all items offered by K&E, not just the items in this catalog.
