Description

Color copy photo of black-and-white photo of winter view six men standing outside an office of the Lawson & Macmurray Lumber Co., ca. 11th St. and Hudson River, Hoboken, no date, ca. 1934-1935. 8" x 10" print. Reverse is blank. The donor provided general location information. His father, Robert Weston, is the man at the left front on the steps. (As determined from his appearance as identified in photo catalog 2003.032.0001.) None of the others are identified. His father worked for the R.G. Mathews Trucking Co. Direction of this view and location of this building on the site is not indicated. This site was occupied by the U.S. Army in World War I. It is where the General Foods Maxwell House Coffee plant was built in 1938-1939. "The gentleman second from right with hand propping his waist is my grandfather, R.G. (Richard Griffith) Mathews, owner of R.G. Mathews Trucking Co in Hoboken. Guy, as he was known, was the stepson of Henry Noble Fletcher, VP of W.H. Fletcher Shipyards in Hoboken. In 1937 a fire destroyed the block along Hudson Street where my grandfather's fleet of trucks were housed." Note received via our web form on 17 December 2020 from Laura Griffith Mathews.
