Description

Color slide of former Pennsylvania Railroad locomotive No. 4877 in Hoboken rail yard, March 11, 1989. 35mm transparency. Photographer was Olev Taremae. Slide is marked "PRR 4877 Hoboken, NJ March 11, 1989." Also processor's date on mount: Mar 89. View is east - northeast of a GG-1 (sometimes listed as "GG1") electric railroad locomotive. In the background at the left is the Neumann Leather building at Willow Ave. and Observer Highway. The unit was not in active service. Last in service in 1983; donated to United Railroad Historical Society of New Jersey, Inc. in 1991. Although it is lettered as Pennsylvania Railroad, it was actually part of New Jersey Transit roster and used by them as tribute to the former Pennsylvania Railroad (which was last known as the Penn-Central.) See notes for some background about this unit built in 1939 and was designed by the noted industrial designer Raymond Loewy.

General Notes

Note

Notes: From the website of United Railroad Historical Society of New Jersey, Inc. in 2008, roster of locomotives in the collection: Builder: Pennsylvania Railroad/Westinghouse Corporation. Model: GG-1 Builder's Numbers: 4346 Built: January 1939 Horsepower: 4620 Original Owner: Pennsylvania Railroad History: Locomotive 4877 was repainted from solid black to "tuscan red" in 1981 as a result of an effort to have an operating GG-1 reminiscent of the Pennsylvania RR in everyday service. This project was a success because of cooperation between the Jersey Central Railway Historical Society and NJ Transit. Sister Locomotive 4879 was the last GG-1 to pull a revenue passenger train in New Jersey. These locomotives served in New York to South Amboy service until retirement in September 1983. They were donated to the museum effort in 1991. Plans are to repaint 4877 into its original 1939 "Brunswick Green" scheme. Original or Copy: Original Status: OK Status By: dw Status Date: 2008-03-03
