Scope and Content

Diary: My Trip Abroad. Compliments of United States Lines. Copy issued to passenger Ruby Margaret Keefer (who sailed on the S.S. America), June 1925. Semi-limp gray decorated full leather, gilt stamp lettering and company logo, 3-1/4" wide x 4-1/2" high, unpaginated (128 pp.) Copyrighted 1924 United States Lines. A nice early example of a souvenir or promotional gift for the line's passengers. The American home port of the United States Lines was Hoboken and the S.S. America would have sailed from here. Keefer did not use this diary for any shipboard notes, but made selected entries in ink or pencil in several categories on her trip. Some of those dated in June or July included a day of week which allowed the year to be determined. Images of all pages with her entries are present here and cover at least an example of all printed sections whether they were used or not. Informational printed matter about S.S. America and on the last few leaves are also shown. Miss Keefer lived at 35 Webster St., Newton, Massachusetts. (See notes for more about her and this address.) Nearest relative was listed as: Mrs. Frank N. Jay, 111 Wells Ave. N.W., Canton, Ohio, U.S.A.

General Notes

Note

Notes: 1940 Census lists her as age 50 in Newton, Mass, which would have made her about 25 years old when on this trip. ==== URL as of 2013: http://newton-local.civicasoft.com/gov/historic/research/collections/papers_allen.asp ----- Nathaniel Allen House, 35 Webster Street, West Newton Upon the death of Nathaniel Allen’s daughter Lucy Ellis Allen, the house passed to her long-time friend and colleague Ruby Margaret Keefer. After Keefer’s death, the house and the residue of the estate was bequeathed to the Unitarian Church of West Newton, Trinity Church in Boston, Radcliffe and Smith Colleges. A non-profit organization acquired the house, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The Allen School and House Preservation Corporation committed to preserve "the history of an illustrious American family of educators by developing an archive or museum...to house their papers, records, and memorabilia; and, also to ultimately help preserve for future generations the character and general environmental health of the village of West Newton." Materials in the Allen House file include a number of contemporary photographs, a copy of bylaws of The Allan House and School Preservation Corporation and other documents and news clippings related to the establishment of the corporation, preservation restrictions, and funding.
