Digital photos, three, of the Wavertree, an 1885 square-rigged cargo vessel, at South Street Seaport Museum, circa 1981-1983. Original color prints ca. 3-1/2" x 5". Scans are 200 percent and not enhanced. Photographer not indicated. Reverse of all were blank; no processor's date codes. Tiffs media archive.
Seen in two pictures is Anton Peskens, father of donor, who came to Hoboken from Holland in 1950. He had worked at the Bethlehem Steel Hoboken Shipyard and had done work on this vessel.
The vessel had returned from some major work including work on the decks, scrapping and painting of the hull and replacement of the bowsprit at the Bethlehem Steel Hoboken Shipyard. See notes for two short articles about this work on the Wavertree, a sailing vessel in the collection of South Street Seaport, New York, since 1968. Vessel is on the National Register of Historic Places.
See photo catalog 2008.062.0100 for 27 views of the vessel in Hoboken and 2008.062.0101 for four views of the ship coming to Hoboken; see archives record 2008.062.0001 for a Hoboken Pictorial column mention with photograph, June 4, 1981.Acquisition

Square-Rigger Returns to South Street Seaport After a $500,000 Renovation From the deck of the sailing vessel Peking, spectators watched yesterday as the Wavertree returned to her berth at the museum. The 96-year-old iron-hulled vessel had been undergoing restoration since May at a shipyard in Hoboken, N.J., including the installation of a new 28-foot bowsprit. The three-masted ship was purchased in 1968 for $70,000 in Argentina, where she was being used as a sand barge. Her repair costs so far have totaled $1.5 million.

From American Heritage, April 1983
NEW YORK, NEW YORK:
The Wavertree, an 1885 square-rigged cargo vessel, is one of the few survivors of the age of deep-water sailing ships and one of the last square-rigged craft that actually sailed from the port of New York. It is being restored by the South Street Seaport Museum (most of the work is done—only the midship deckhouse needs fixing). When completed, the Wavertree will be an exhibition vessel as accurate as possible in every detail. She will be open to the public year round. Grant: $7,500.
