Profile
Maurice Fitzgibbons
Maurice Fitzgibbons is from Hoboken, New Jersey, where he was the former Supervisor of Recreation. In 1986, he was appointed Administrator of Cultural Affairs for Hudson County, Division of Cultural and Heritage Affairs, where he served until March 1990, when he became Director of the Office of Ethnic Affairs.
While serving as Administrator of Cultural Affairs for Hudson County, he served as liaison to the New Jersey Martin Luther King Jr. Commission and the Congressional Bi-Centennial of the Constitution Committee and the 1986 Statue of Liberty Celebration.
Maurice has also participated in, coordinated and hosted many ethnic events. He has been very active with the Polish-American Heritage Association of Bayonne, the Jersey City Hispanic Day Parade, the Hudson County St. Patrick's Day Flag Raising Ceremony as well as the Greek and Arabian ethnic groups.
Maurice also served as Co-Chairman of the Hudson County Columbus Day Parade from 1982 to 1985. He was also honored as Irishman of the Year in 1982 by the Hoboken Young Democrats. Last month, he was elected Executive Director of the New Jersey Columbus Quincentennial Commission for 1992.
Maurice also serves as the Volunteer Public Relations Chairman for the St. Ann's Italian Festival in Hoboken. His experience in special events include liaison for the New Jersey Transit Festival 1981-86 and the New Jersey Waterfront Marathon 1985-86.
Maurice's plans for the Office of Ethnic Affairs include an expansion in services relating to educational programs and folk arts. This year's festival features the First Annual Governor's Inter-Cultural Parade, an idea of Maurice's.
He hopes to have the office serve as a valuable tool in the preservation of our state's rich diverse multicultural communities. He wants to get out and visit as many ethnic groups as possible as well as being accessible. Maurice looks forward to working closely with Governor Florio's office, Secretary of State Haberle and the Ethnic Advisory Council. He sees the Office of Ethnic Affairs as a new wave playing a major role among History and the Arts and Tourism in our state. The opening of Ellis Island marks a new era for the future of this office.
Maurice also heads the state's 500th. Anniversary celebration of Christpher Columbus' Discovery of America, which he is coordinating with Operation Sail in New York Harbor. Basically, Maurice's duties in Trenton, include representing the Governor and Secretary of State at various State ethnic functions. And, on occasion, in New York. His background of half Irish and half Italian gives him a "particular sensitivity" to the needs and problems of varied ethnic groups.

For over 70 years, the Hoboken Lions Club has served the community, of Hoboken. Our charities have aided the blind, visually handicapped and indigent. As we honor our "Man of the Year", Maurice Fitzgibbons with our Charity Ball, our choice has abided by the very principles that Lionism was founded originally. Our motto was adopted as "We Serve" and our "Man of the Year" and the Hoboken Lions Club have lived up to that very motto ... "We help our Fellow Human Beings"!!
Our Service organization is comprised of over 38,000 individual clubs in 160 countries with 1.3 million members who quietly take an active interest in the civic, cultural, social and moral welfare of their communities. We help our fellow human beings, particularly, the Blind, Homeless, Indigent and Distressed.
We hope that you our guests, will enter in the Spirt of Lionism and contribute to your community. Let us all hope and pray for a peaceful and eventful 1992.
