Scope and Content

Hoboken Public School No. 1 textbook with decorative school ownership bookplate, "2nd Class," 1889. This copy belonged to a Birdie Whilldin whose name appears the top edge and the date of "Sept. 1889" was written at the lower edge. It is obvious that the cursive writing is not that of a second grade elementary student. Printed yellow leaf, 4-1/4" x 4-3/8", mounted on inside of front cover. Text is in notes. Kerl's Language Lessons. An Elementary Textbook of English Grammar. Edited by S.M. Perkins. New York and Chicago: Ivison, Blakeman & Co., copyright 1878. ---- Donors Wayne and Joyce Monsees do not know who Whilldin was or of any relationship by Whilldin to their Hoboken ancestors, but they did have relatives who attended Hoboken schools in that era.
