Description

Image: S.S. Leviathan sailing south on the Hudson River, New York City in the background, 1935 (actually 1934). Inkjet print of the verso of leaf 10 of 16 from photographer William Craig's album. Holographic caption. Signed by William Craig. Formerly the Hamburg-America Line's "Vaterland," the vessel was laid up in 1931. In 1934, she was repainted and returned to transatlantic service for just 4 round-trip voyages before being laid up at the Hoboken piers in late 1934. When she left in 1938 to be scrapped, the stacks were lowered. Even though Craig dates this 1935, it had to be in 1934.
