Letter patch "D" from Demarest High School, Hoboken, circa 1936. Off-white and maroon wool felt, 4-1/4" wide x ca. 5-1/2" high.
Since this example is made of felt rather than a woven fabric as is typical of commerically made ones and it has irregularities in shape and stitching, it is probable that the one here was made by a student in a class or home project. This example has remains of thread at the center of the top edge indicating that it was once attached to something other than a sweater or jacket or hung from that point. No stitch holes at edges which if present would have indicated its use as an applique.
Probably once belonged to a Christina Stephensen, June 1936 graduate of this school.
