Description
Locator's [Hand] Level made by Keuffel & Esser Co., New York, for Engineer Department, U.S.A. No date, circa 1915-1940.
Square brass tube with bronze finish, 5" long x 1" square (not including bubble.); clear glass with black scale; objective lens. With: original slipcase cardboard box imprinted on top of sleeve with title above.
No model number or any markings on item identifying it by model number or as made by Keuffel & Esser. Only the box states K&E. It corresponds to Hand Level 5703 in a general way in dimensions and finish. The major difference is that the 5703 which was offered for several decades had a patented viewing system that placed the bubble in the center of the field of view. In the model here, it is seen to the left. The item here is probably a contract item made to client specifications. The date range for this item is only speculative based on typeface and condition.
K&E main office and factories were in Hoboken during the period when this was manufactured.
