Demarest was the Superintendent of Public Instruction, Hoboken, N.J. The reader is for Grade 4 and is based on a system developed by the authors from other methods. They call theirs on the title page "Synthetic and Phonic Word Method." Originally published in 1900 and a new edition issued in ca. 1918. This copy has signatures on the endleaf and are dated from 1925 to 1927 (also see dated signatures in 2002.222.0010.) Below one of the names is "Fourth Grade."
