Description

Photographs of War Zone Pass, U.S. Customs Service, Port of New York issued to Liberantonio Bonsanto, 417 Jefferson St., Hoboken, N.J., May 21, 1918. Digital images only of both sides of document. Front: printed form with holographic entries; inkstamps: serial number, date, signature of the Surveyor of Customs; identification photo upper left with blind embossed validation seal at upper left corner. Back: printed text regarding the pass regulations; ruled block for thumb print (which is not present); ink signature of passholder Bonsanto. Pass holder was employed as a laborer by the Wkn. [Weehawken] Freight Handling Company. He was at that time a foreign national and was drafted into the U.S. Army circa four weeks after this pass was issued (see notes at below.) ---- Donor Jim Rosati related in a September 2012 email and telephone conversation: I am sending images of my Grandfather's pass. He lived in Hoboken from 1913 to 1919. He ended up getting drafted about 4 weeks later and spent a year in France, coming back to Hoboken in (June) 1919. He made at least one more trip to Hoboken in 1924 for a US passport. He sailed to Italy in January 1925 and brought home a bride, my grandmother, in July 1925. (Rosati related that his grandfather's military service (with honors) expedited his application for American citizenship; address in Hoboken was that of his brother who had preceded Liberantonio's arrival in Hoboken.) --- identification card; ID; security
