Scope and Content

Plans for the Ferry Houses of the Hoboken Land & Improvement Co., Hoboken, N.J as they appeared in American Architect & Building News, Feb. 3, 1883, Issue no. 371. Single plate removed from the issue, 12-9/16" wide x 17" high (double plate as bound would have had height as 12-9/16" high; gutter fold crease at center where original binding stub was attached.) See related for a plate with details, archives 2008.012.0060. The architect was H. Edwards-Fickens, 19 West 22nd St., N.Y. (His name is more commonly indexed as H. Edward Fickens without the hyphen as seen on the plate.) The plate has three sections. Top is a color rendering "Shore front" of the western facade of the "Ferry-Houses." Center is a plan of "Ferry Buildings" which is dimensioned. The center of the building was entry area, waiting rooms, offices and a bell tower flanked on each side by two slips. Bottom is a color rendering of the "River front" facade showing the four ferry slips. This building was constructed at the Hudson River at Hudson Place and connected to the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad Terminal which was to its south (there are doors marked for the connection to the terminal.) The Hoboken Ferry Company operated from this ferry building. The ferry and the Hoboken Land & Improvement Company were both ventures of the Stevens family of Hoboken. This terminal is the one that burned down in 1905. The elaborate copper clad facility that replaced it on the same site was opened officially in 1907. See objects catalog 2006.034.0675 and .0677 for views of terminal before it burned down. See objects 2006.034.0692 for a view of the remains after the August 1905 fire of the terminal including the bell tower.
