Description

Postcard: [D.L. & W. #960, Baldwin, Hoboken, N.J.] No place (see below), no date, circa 1907-1917. Real photo postcard, divided back, Velox stamp box. 3-3/8" x 5-3/8" wide. Unposted. No photographer or issuer indicated. Reverse has the title in pencil. Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad, Class G, Baldwin 4-4-0 camelback steam locomotive; for scale purposes, note that the driver wheels were 69" in diameter. Although the penciled information states Hoboken, it was probably not in Hoboken. This particular locomotive did not regularly operate from Hoboken (if it was in Hoboken, it was possibly here for a special run or other circumstance.) At least five of this type made by this builder were in use here (see notes.) Dating of image: probably taken in 1906-1908. Taber notes that the lettering on equipment was changed from "D.L. & W." to "Lackawanna" in 1908. Issue date of postcard: possibly as late as 1917 as indicated by the Velox stamp box.
