Scope and Content

Postcard: Hoboken Terminal. By Jane Finck Doscher. Village Art Center, 42-44 West 11th Street, New York 11, N.Y. No date, issued circa 1947-1960. Black-and-white (although it may have originally appeared with blue cast) reproduction of watercolor painting by the artist depicting a night view looking south of the exterior of the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad terminal. Hoboken Terminal was also known as Lackawanna Terminal. The Sam Sloan Statue is seen. See reference image of the a similar watercolor painting of the same subject held by the Doscher family as of 2014. Note the differences in the number and style of vehicles depicted between the artwork on the postcard and the watercolor image along with the background and sky. Printed tan cardstock, 3-1/2" x 5-1/2", divided back. Unused and unposted. Four copies. Printed by Arthur Jaffe Heliochrome Co., New York City, U.S.A. ( Heliochrome implies color printing which was the usual method for this company's work, but here the product "appears" as only black-and-white; images on record for the front are shown unenhanced and enhanced due to darkening of the paper stock and to provide a version that may be a more probable rendition of the original image.) Doscher was the married name of Martha Jane Finck (Aug. 15, 1918 - March 10, 2005). The original painting may have been done between 1940 and 1950. Dating of card was based on the usage of a postal zone in the address (introduced in 1947) and the clock tower seen on the terminal which was damaged in a 1950 storm and removed the next year. The postcard may have been published later in the 1950s. It is one in an un-numbered series issued by the Village Art Center. Three others are present, but none have art that depicts Hoboken. All are unused. 2. Fox Trot. By R.R. Walters. Copyright R.R. Walters. 3. Chinatown. By Bertram Goodman. Two copies. 4. "The Albert Gordon". By Amy Jones. (fantasy harbor view with two bridges and the Gordon tugboat.) Two copies.
