Scope and Content

Postcard: United States Lines promotional souvenir folder postcard, (New York), no date, circa 1924-1929. Printed paper (full color), 11-1/4" wide x 7" high (+ 3/8" gummed adhesive closure tab) folded to 5-5/8" wide x 3-1/2" high. Text is in notes. An onboard souvenir item for passengers on voyages with a descriptive text of London, the U.S. Lines ships and their plus a dinner menu that was apparently intended to show the typical offerings at a meal. None of the copy is specific to any of the six ships mentioned as part of their translatlantic fleet. May be considered as an advertising item or advertisement. Listed in text: "United States Lines transatlantic fleet. Leviathan, World's Largest Ship. The magnificent cabin liners: George Washington, America, Republic, President Roosevelt and President Harding." Hoboken is not mentioned in any text, but the United States Lines were based in Hoboken in this era. Except for the S.S. Leviathan (which used Pier 86 in New York), all other ocean liners or passenger ships used Hoboken as their American home port. (Dating: the Republic and Leviathan first sailed in 1924 under U.S. Lines which helps to determine an early date for this item; late date is likely 1929 when the logo seen on the front (address side) was changed.)
