Description

Promotional photo button with mirror back: A. Van Der Weil Art Photographer, 120-122 Washington St., Hoboken, N.J. No date, circa 1910-1920. 2-3/16" diameter; printed sepia-tone photo portrait of a man with type in circular border; celluloid cover; back is inserted mirror. Apparent color retouching on face. The person is not identified, but it is believed to be a self-portrait of the photographer for promotional purposes and has been found to be a detail from photo taken not later than 1920 - see photos 2014.013.0097 - including the tree branch at the bottom (which is part of a Christmas tree.) Anthon (or Anthony?) was found listed as Vanderwiel with a home address of 132 Washington St., Hoboken, in 1926 Polk's Directory. Only a single reference to his work has been found regarding a photo taken by him: a 1914 dated Hoboken photograph in a collection at Utah State University - see notes. Useful to note that the 122 Washington Street address was in this period the site of another photographer / photo retailer, Herman (or Hermann) Jaffee who had a retail shop at that address. It is not believed that Van Der Weil was the proprietor of this business or that he occupied two buildings, 120 and 122. In the same 1926 Polk's Directory is a photography studio, Hollywood Art Studio, at 120-122 Washington St. run by a F. Bertil (the first name may be a typographic error; a John Bertil was listed in the same directory as a photographer with a home at 100 Washington St., but no F. Bertil.) An advertisement for this studio appears on page 1101.

Notes: The Mae Crookston Wennegren Photograph Album, 1910-1920 Box 1 Folder 13 Mormon Missionaries [loose photographs from album] 1:075: Portrait, D.L. Olsen, Eastern States Mission. Photo A. Van der Wiel, Art Photographer, Hoboken, New Jersey 1914 ---- Creator: Crookston, Newell J., 1890-1976. Title: Mae Crookston Wennegren photograph collection Dates: 1910-1920 ( inclusive ) 1914-1917 ( bulk ) Quantity: 1 box (0.5 linear ft. ) Collection Number: USU_P0130 Summary: An album consisting of 249 black & white photographic images, mostly snapshots, taken and/or collected by Newell James Crookston between roughly 1910 and 1917. Many of these photos are from an Eastern States mission (1914-1915) for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and consist of New York City views, and of sites relevant to early Mormon Church history. Other images are of Washington D.C., Logan Canyon, agriculture on the Crookston farm, and Crookston family members. Identification of the photographs was either determined from internal evidence or supplied by Mrs. Wennegren. The album was disassembled to prevent further damage from occurring due to loose prints and surface rubbing caused by traces of glue. Each photograph was numbered in pencil above the upper right hand corner. Repository: Utah State University.
