Description

Railroad curves, set 2204 (incomplete) or 31 each individual items 2209, pearwood, tangent mark, radius in inches, made by Keuffel & Esser Co., N.Y. No date, circa 1900-1925. Wood, 1/8" thick, 31 pieces with varying lengths from 7 to 18 inches and widths from 1-3/8" to 1-13/16". Each has a hang hole near left edge. Tangent mark scribed 3" from left edge. Between tangent line and left edge is blind stamped a number (radius size), circular logo "Keuffel & Esser Co., N.Y." and the griffin trademark. (The items in this record and related objects in 2009.006.0132 (10 wood railroad curves with tangent mark, radius in degrees and inches) are stored in the same wooden container as received; container may been made by K&E, but is not marked or labeled in any way.) Set 2204 called for 44 pieces in the 35th edition catalogue of 1915. This set appears to be one that included only pearwood curves without a tangent line as it was described and depicted. Wood curves with tangents were offered individually as 2209. An April 1920 price list stated that 2209 would be discontinued when stock was exhausted. K & E main offices and factories were in Hoboken during this period. This product was typically used by in drafting table work by draftsmen, architects, designers, engineers and others. List of 31curves present in this group (those listed as "not present" are those listed in set 2204 and is done only for comparision purposes.)
