Scope and Content

Set of eight recipe cards for Davis Baking Powder; issued by R.B. Davis Company, Hoboken, N.J., no date (ca. 1920-1922). Eight color lithographed cards, 3" high x 4-1/2" wide imprinted in black on reverse with advertising text. With original imprinted envelope with contemporary holographic ink list of the included recipes. Cards are not numbered, but are listed here in the order as stated by a contemporary owner on the envelope. All have different promotional text on the reverse, intitial phrase follows the baked item listed below. Beneath this varying ad copy on some is the slogan "It's Positively Pure" or "Davis Baking Powder" (arrangement varies). All have the lines "A complete set of these recipe cards will be mailed upon request - R.B. Davis Co., Hoboken, N.J." Note border and field color varies as well as the general type placement on the back. 1. Oatmeal Cookies; We Don't Give Premiums. 2. Sugar Cookies ; Its reasonable price. 3. Cocoanut [sic - coconut] Cake; You owe It to yourself ... 4. Strawberry Short Cake; Why waste money? 5. Jelly Roll; High is quality, low is price. 6. Wheat Muffins; Said Mrs. Jones: 7. Plain Doughnuts; It was Mr. Davis' idea ... 8. Hot Biscuits; Don't follow blindly ... The envelope has a faint yellow printing of a artist's bird's-eye view of the Hoboken factory titled above "Home of Davis Baking Powder." This front side of the envelope has the list mentioned above. Back of the envelope has the company name, location, elaborate depiction of a red and gold labeled can plus the advertising slogan "It's Positively Pure." The envelope is not addressed or posted, but it would have been used for such purpose as when the set was requested. This is not all of the cards issued in this series and the full number in a complete set has not been established. (See archives 2012.001.0139 for another card.) Date determined from text on card 7 referring to Davis establishing the business "41 years ago" which would have been 1879 and thus dating their issue as early as 1920. But the varying colors and the differing type placement on the back could mean they were issued over a longer period with issue being later than 1920.
