Description

Sepia-tone photo of the Maxwell House Coffee plant under construction at Eleventh and Hudson Streets, Hoboken, winter, 1938-1939. Original print was 2-3/4" x 4-1/2" wide; reverse was blank; scanned 2009. Photograph taken by Robert C. Sylvester from home at 1026 Hudson St., Hoboken. Digital image only; enlarged inkjet reference print on file. Large, high resolution tiffs media archive. Elevated view from the third or fourth floor of this apartment building is looking northeast. See notes. Construction of the factory is well underway. A detail of the upper center shows the supports being used for concrete floor forms; it is not the metal structure for the neon sign. At the left edge, the tall building is the former Nungesser-Dickinson Seed Company building, 1203-1209 Hudson Street, which was part of the Bethlehem Steel Hoboken Shipyard. Related images are 2009.026.0100, which are photos, taken in 1938 by the same photographer and with the same viewpoint, of the Lawson Macmurray Lumber Company which occupied the site until 1938.
