Description

Sepia tone photos, two, of Hoboken Land & Improvement Co., 1 Newark Street, Hoboken, March 24, 1931. 8" x 10" wide prints. Photograph taken by R. Magnus (credit with date in images lower right.) Reverse of both are blank. This Hoboken Land & Improvement Building is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is located at the southeast corner of Newark and River Streets. Photo 1: view northeast of the Hoboken Land & Improvement Co. building. This scene is its west end at the foot of Newark Street (this street narrows and continues on the north side of the building) where it meets River Street plus the south side that is essentially a broad alley. Streetcars traveled through this cobblestone paved area, with two tracks seen. The building in the left background (the north side of Newark St.) is the U.S. Post Office which was soon to be demolished and replaced. (Note the automobile at the right, this is the area of the building seen in photo 2.) [condition of this print is problematic: spots, creased and torn; pinholes.] Photo 1, detail left: Hoboken Land & Improvement Co. lighted sign with arrow. This sign was on the west end of the building. Photo 1, detail left: metal sign in front of window, west end of 1 Newark St. - H.L. & I. Co. Rent Office. Also a painted hanging sign at the corner. Photo 2: view north of main entrance doors, 1 Newark St., south side of building. Signs and window lettering are seen. C.A. Burhorn Company, Real Estate, Coal (this firm would have been founded by C. Alfred Burhorn.) Edward Stover, Counsellor At Law, 3rd Floor, Room 29 Fred F. Schmidt, Real Estate & Insurance. This photo is from an accession group that consists of photographs from Hoboken Police Department records. Discarded in the 1990s, the original documentary purpose of this photo is not stated or apparent.
