Four-page handwritten letter in German in black ink to "Lulu" (Ludwig) from Martin and Thekla Ballin, Ludwig's parents; dated 16 July 1939. The letter is written on a single piece of stationary that is folded in half like a book. Martin writes on the front, the inside pages, and the top of the back page. Thekla writes on the remainder of the back page. There is some vertical writing on the first page in the left margin, along with writing upside down in pencil in the top and bottom margins of the first page. To the left of the vertical writing, at the bottom of the first page, are two exclamation points in red pencil. Unclear if those were added by the writer or the recipient.
