"132. Santa Monica, (Watering Place)" by William M. Godfrey, ca. 1870. The image shows an expanse of beach in the foreground with a few persons standing upon it. In the background are some white tented structures, some with fencing around them, at the base of a hill that terminates at the beach. It is unclear if the tents are for tourism purposes and if the fencing provided enclosures for animals (there is a horse near the farthest left structure.) On the reverse is the mark of "Godfrey's Photographic View Rooms, Los Angeles, Cal." and there are two stamps for Samuel Hellman's stationery and book store in Los Angeles, though these are only partially visible. With water stains on the back of the mount, a mark on the left image "on the hill", two marks at the top of the right image, soiling, fading, and edge rubbing, the overall condition is fair.Lexicon
