Description

Color: Black; White A photonegative print of a map of Southern California, compiled by Charles H. Howland and published by Howland and Koeberle, 1886. The extent of the map is from the Mexican border to Kern County from south to north and the San Bernardino Mountains to the Pacific Ocean from west to east. Taken from plats of U. S. land surveys, physical features such as cities and towns; public lands; ranches; and sections are shown. Notable also is the San Bernardino Base Line, at the center running east to west and the San Bernardino Meridian. The title, in block letters within a highly ornamented design, at the lower left hand reads "Map/Of/A Part Of/Southern California/Accurately Compiled From/Plats of U.S. Land Surveys,/County Records/And Other Reliable Sources, By Howland & Koeberle/Surveyors & Draughtsman/Los Angeles Cal./1886". At the bottom left is an index; at lower center is a table of distances from Los Angeles and just below the title is a scale indicator. With little indication of wear or damage, aside from minor creases, the artifact is in good condition. Number-Units: 1
