Description

A stereoscopic photograph, "19. Part of Los Angeles. (Bird's-eye)," by Henry T. Payne, Los Angeles, ca. 1872. The image, taken from Fort Moore Hill, shows the Pico House, Merced Theater, Masonic Lodge and area across from these buildings on Main Street, just south of the Plaza. In the background, though hazy, are outlying areas east and southeast toward Los Angeles River. The title is pasted on the bottom right and Payne's name is at the right. On the reverse is a pencil inscription: "My Room Upper Story over Lead Pencil Dot," corresponding to the dot marked on both images at the third window from the left. Aside from this and soiling and discoloration, the condition is fair overall.
