Description

"19. Sonora. Los Angeles. (Bird's-eye.)" by Henry T. Payne, ca. 1872. The view, taken from the northeast corner of Fort Moore Hill looks northward toward what became Elysian Park and takes in what was commonly called "Sonora" or "Sonoratown," a residential area north of the Plaza mainly inhabited by Latinos. Some wide streets intersect below the hill and houses and outbuildings proliferate. In the distance, below the hills, is the old Calvary Cemetery. With some soiling and edge rubbing, the overall condition is good.
