Description
"232. Seal Rookery, Santa Catalina Island, Cal.," C. B. Waite, ca. 1890s. The image is taken from a rocky beach and looks out to an outcropping of rock in a shallow bay off the island. Seals are found both on the lower portions of the rock and in the water. Slivers of hillsides, rock formations and the beach are in view as well as an expanse of the ocean.
"245. Beach at Avalon, Santa Catalina Isl," C. B. Waite, ca. 1890s. On the reverse of the above photo, the view is taken from the rocky west end of the beach and looks back towards more of the shore where a few dozen people sit on the ground with a number of small canoes nearby and there are a couple of sea bathers. Further in are a number of structures, including the old Metropole Hotel closest to the camera and smaller buildings and a pavilion at the other end.
In both cases, there is some light soiling and minimal edge rubbing and the condition is good.
